POET BJ WARD TEACHES THE TOOLS OF HIS TRADE TO OLD TURNPIKE SCHOOL’S 8th GRADE
Prize winning poet BJ Ward conducted a one day poetry workshop for Old Turnpike School’s (OTS) eighth grade on Monday, December 17. The Washington Township resident and Warren Community College creative writing professor – whose fourth poetry collection titled “Jackleg Opera” will be published by Random House in September – inspired Tewksbury’s eighth graders with his signature high energy, spontaneous style and intense passion for the written word. “I strongly believe poetry is everywhere,” said Ward. “All week long, I get to work with adults at the college where I teach, and there is a certain polish to the poetry written by my adult students. But poetry is also there for twelve and thirteen year olds, and there is a certain sheen to their work that’s not polish, but it’s bright, and I miss it when I don’t encounter it.” The December workshop was funded by the Tewksbury Education Foundation.
