On Feb. 23, 2016, the author of the New Jersey-based Nicky Fifth series Lisa Funari Willever visited with the 4th grade to teach the students how she writes her books and the specific roles of the writer, editor, and publisher as they collaborate on a project. This author visit was sponsored by a TEF mini-grant, funds that the TEF sets aside for specific teacher-requested programs or projects. The TEF would like to extend a special thank you to 4th grade teacher Mrs. Nugent for coordinating this visit.
Students smiled and laughed as Mrs. Willever shared her personal life experiences that served as outlines for future characters, settings, and scenes, emphasizing that authors should write from their own experiences and interests. Mrs. Willever also emphasized the motivation for writing her chapter book series, Nicky Fifth: To teach students more about the history and places of our great state!
Students received the latest copy of Mrs. Willever’s book as well as her writing workbook, which will be used in class. Some students from each class had a lunch discussion with Mrs. Willever and got to ask her more detailed questions about the Nicky Fifth Series. If students have any further questions they can email the author through the Nicky Fifth website at http://nickyfifth.com .
Following the visit, students wrote letters to the TEF to express their appreciation for this visit and what they learned from Mrs. Willever. Here are a few samples of the wonderful letters we received:
