1st Graders Welcome Author and Illustrator Dar Hosta

CHILDREN’S AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR DAR HOSTA HELPS TEWKSBURY’S 1ST GRADE PUBLISH CLASS BOOKS

The Tewksbury Education Foundation (TEF) brought children’s author and illustrator Dar Hosta to Tewksbury Elementary School (TES) to conduct a three day in-classroom publishing residency on January 24, 26 and 27 for the school’s first grade.  Hosta guided each of the school’s three first grade classes through alliteration and illustration; the latter utilizing the author’s signature painting and collage techniques.  Each class will ultimately publish a book comprised of student’s individual pages and original artwork by the visiting author. “A lumpy lazy lobster learned about letters at Library class,” wrote first grader Clayton Annis as the alliteration for his page. Catherine Bryan, another first grader, wrote, “The odd, old owl flew over an orange octopus eating oatmeal.” “Dar’s program definitely enhanced [the students’] imaginations,” said TES first grade teacher Marilynne Regan.  “Her program excited them and motivated them to write; and that’s the ballgame with first graders — exciting them to write.” Additional information on the program, the TEF and other TEF programs can be found at www.tewksburytef.org or on FACEBOOK.
