Professional dancer, actress, and educator Joanna Pang Atkins will be bringing her inspirational Parade of Nations Dance Celebration to the first grade during a six-day residency.
History, geography, social studies, music, and math are all incorporated into Joanna Pang Atkins’ Parade of Nations Dance Celebration. The first grade will learn different folk dances representing a country or culture (this year’s residency will focus on Japan, Scotland, and Russia), while also learning about history, geography, music, and traditional attire. The residency culminates with an assembly program for students and parents where the class performs its own dance in full costume. The students introduce each dance segment with a description of the country of origin and history of the dance. The children experience both the process of learning by participation and the thrill of performance.
